With Thanksgiving just around the corner, it’s time to be thankful not only for the big things, but also for the small, everyday moments that often bring us joy. These "glimmers of joy" are simple pleasures that have a way of lifting our spirits and helping us stay grounded, especially during busy or challenging times.
I recognize that not everyone observes Thanksgiving. Still, I hope you take this opportunity to reflect on the small, everyday moments of joy that brighten your life.
What are Glimmers of Joy?
Glimmers of joy are the small moments that brighten our day—moments we might overlook if we’re not paying attention. They can come from something as simple as a cup of tea, a song you like, or a vase with beautiful flowers. These sparks of happiness remind us that joy does not always have to be grand to be meaningful.
Let’s seek out and celebrate those moments that bring us peace and happiness. Here are a few ways to discover your own "glimmers of joy":
1. Joy in Everyday Life
Sometimes, joy is right in front of us, in the simplest of things. Maybe it’s a bite of your favorite dessert or the quiet moment in the morning before everyone wakes up. Find joy in the routine, in the small victories of your day.
Examples:
- The calm of morning before the day gets busy.
- That first breath of fresh air when you step outside.
2. Joy in Nature
Spending time outside, even if it’s just for a few minutes, can be incredibly restorative. Whether it’s taking a walk, sitting in your backyard, or simply watching the sunset, nature has a unique way of helping us feel more connected and at peace.
Examples:
- The beauty of the scenery around you (a client of mine observes the marks in the city’s concrete sidewalks and imagines art or a story they convey).
- A moment to listen to and enjoy the sound of birds.
3. Joy in Connection
This time of year is all about family, friends, and connection -- whether you're gathering with loved ones or taking a quiet moment to reach out to someone you care about.
Examples:
- Connecting with friends before or after a class.
- Sharing laughter over a cup of coffee or a meal.
4. Joy in Hobbies and Passions
Do you have something you love doing, something that brings you a sense of accomplishment or relaxation? Whether it’s a hobby, a creative outlet, or an activity you enjoy on your own, these passions provide a welcome break from stress and help you focus on the things that make you feel good.
Examples:
- Crafting, painting, or writing.
- Being a part of a musical ensemble.
5. Joy in Small Acts of Kindness
Sometimes, joy comes from doing something small for others. Whether it’s offering a kind word, lending a hand, or surprising someone with a thoughtful gesture, these acts of kindness can be incredibly fulfilling and remind us of the goodness in the world.
Examples:
- A surprise note or message to brighten someone’s day.
- Helping a neighbor or friend with something they need.
A Time for Gratitude and Joy
As we reflect on all we have to be thankful for this season, let’s not forget to look for little moments of joy. They may not always be obvious, but they’re always there -- waiting to be noticed. This Thanksgiving let’s give thanks for the small, everyday moments that make life truly special.
Wishing you a joyful, peaceful Thanksgiving filled with gratitude, connection, and, of course, plenty of glimmers of joy.
With gratitude,
Ana Isabel Sánchez
